Hello my first post, hope it's in the right place? :)

I've dropped my HP Pavilion Laptop , now is not loading the Vista OS. I'm getting: an 'Operating System not found' message.
Have run a HDD check in the BIOS and it's telling me no IDE device, so i guess it's time for a new Hard Drive :(, my question is:

If I take it in for repair and I have a Product Key for Vista and MS Works will the repairer be able to re-install the new software under that product key or will I have to pay for it. I'll be using PC World (UK), do they have the authority to do that??

I did not make Recovery Discs (stupid I know!). I've a bit of paper that came with the PC saying I can order Recovery Media from HP but can't find anywhere on their site that deals with it.

    Can Microsoft help me?

Thanks, any help or advice greatly appreciated!

    Tony. :)

If the hard drive is toast, yes, you'll need to get the disks from HP.

For how to get the recovery disks, see the HP page, HP Notebook PCs - Obtaining a Recovery CD or DVD set for Windows Vista.

For future reference, I found that page by typing "order recovery" in the search box in the upper right-hand corner of the main HP page.

I suggest that before you do that, have the laptop checked out wherever you take it for repair. It may be nothing more than a loose connection. It may be there's other damage though, so if you need to order parts, you might be able to get it all done in one phone call to HP.
