Hi and welcome to the BBS,

"...everything was fine... ". Was it working on the internet?

Does it have Service Pack 1? That might be what it requires. Look at sticky posts at the top of this forum. You will need to download it via another computer and transfer the file to the problem one.

I have found networking much easier since recent updates and Service Pack 1.

    A maybe suggestion...
If Virgin have installed any software, uninstall it (Control Panel [Switch to Classic View] -> Programs and Features) and reinstall it. Be careful to follow the instructions.

You should tell us what sort of internet connection it is (ADSL, Cable or Wireless).

After making certain it has SP1 (Control Panel -> System , "Version" will tell you if the sevice pack is installed), I would go back to the Virgin helpdesk and tell them that you have been referred back to them, ask to speak to a supervisor if the tech cannot help you.

    Matt

"No local area connection ".. That's a PC issue, unless the modem (or router) itself is fried. Check the network cable before making that diagnosis though.

This "reputation" thing is a nuisance.. I read this by chance.

Testing a NIC is a very simple procedure. Plug the cable in. If it says "limited or no connectivity" there's at least a connection there, and then investigation can reveal why it's not getting an IP.

If it says "no connection" it's pretty straight forward. The network connectivity in either the modem or the NIC is "fried" or the cable is no good.

    Change the cable.
Plug another device into the modem. Look for the link lights.
Plug any network device into the computer NIC. Even if it looks for an IP and doesn't find it, you've got connectivity. Even a simple 4 port switch will work for that test, or another PC.

Well, yes, but your 2nd answer is actually useful, your first one wasn't, specially not for a user that lists his expertise as 'beginner'.

Yeah, I guess I should look at those. Point is I wish whoever posted that rep thing could have posted in here so I could have seen it and addressed it. It was only by chance that I hit my control panel while looking for something else and noticed it. :)
