Alright, so it seems that if you're buying any version of Vista, or any other OS software from Microsoft, you can apparently return it for a full refund as there seems to be a clause on the package saying something like that if you don't agree with the Terms and Conditions, you are entitled to return the product for a full refund.

Jeez...So what does that mean for the serial key's? What if someone buys it just for the key and then returns it???

    It'a always been this way...

    XP OEM EULA.txt:

Note the last line about in accordance with the Manufactures's return policy. Most Retail stores have policies about the shrink wrap still being intact...

Yea I know. But what if someone buys Vista, only to return it for the key? That makes us suckers who want a legit copy, no?

You have to open the shrink wrap to get to the key. Many retailers won't take it back cause they aren't stupid:)

In most cases due to copyright protection ( and abusive and coniving buyers) retailers are unable to return opened software.
The best most of them can do is exchange it for the same software - an unopened box if the software is defective.
You would have to find another sucker who wanted a copy of Vista.
It is also amazing how many retailers have heat shrink sealing kits.
It is surprising at big box stores how few opened pieces of hardware that have been returned on sale on their shelves for all of the customers returning items at their "customer service" desk lineup.

Yea, I know. When I was returning something at CompUSA a while back, I noticed someone returning Windows XP Pro one time and he had the box open and the employee promptly refunded his money after checking that everything that was supposed to be in the box was. I also noticed that his receipt said "Customer may open package and return for a refund if incompatible" lol...
