A friend of mine with a older model high end Toshiba Pentium 4 had an interesting scenario to ponder.
What if a customer bought copy of Vista from the Best Buy ( where the laptop was purchased ) could not install it , then took it to Best Buy to instal telling them he was unable to.
If Best Buy was unable to also install Vista - and keep in mind the video and sound driver issues ( or lack of issues) what would best buy charge or not charge and would they or Microsoft accept a return of the product ?
I know full well with software once opened it is non returnable.

    Ask Best Buy...

As for the software, once opened it's 'yours'.

Well, it seems to me that it revolves around the terms of the agreement between the customer and BestBuy for the installation.

If the laptop is not Vista capable, then I'd guess that BestBuy was entitled to some compensation for even attempting the task.

If the laptop is Vista capable, then I'd guess that it would depend on the level of driver support that BestBuy could obtain (in conjunction with the above agreement between the customer and BestBuy). If drivers aren't obtainable, it's not BestBuy's fault, nor is it Microsoft's fault. Also, Toshiba isn't known for posting a lot of drivers on it's US website - so that will make things much more difficult.

Return of the product is only likely if the product (DVD) is defective.

FWIW - we've got a older Gateway computer at my shop that we installed Vista Home Premium on. It constantly crashes for assorted reasons - most are due to driver issues with the proprietary Gateway components inside the case.
