How long does Vista take to install? I am upgrading from XP to Home Premium, the setup reboots, but it has been stuck at a multi-colored screen and the hourglass for about 1 hour. There is hardly any hard drive activity. The install process started from XP, and on the first reboot that's when it became frozen. Should I be more patient???

Ok, here's an update - Since yesterday afternoon I've been on the phone with Microsoft tech support, and we've tried all kinds of options. As usual, they try to blame a hardware problem, but then they cannot explain how I can reinstall XP with no problem. Last night I left the machine on with a message stating "Starting Windows for the first time." This morning all I had was a blank screen. After a reboot, I got the message stating "windows did not load the last time" with options to start normally, safe mode, etc. No matter what option I choose, I only get a blank screen. Right now I'm waiting for tech support to call me back because they have to consult with "senior" techs. I suspect a corrupted DVD, and the tech support guy kind of agrees with me. We'll see what happens. I'll post updates.

The solution was a hardware problem, but I discovered it by trial and error. I ran Vista install again, but chose the option to repair. Though it didn't repair it, it did give me a summary of what it found, and one item caught my eye: an external media device. Now, I installed Vista with no USB or other devices attached, as recoomended by tech support, but I did have a PCI Hauppauge TV Tuner installed, so I decided to take it out. I ran Vista install again, and it ran and installed perfectly!

I had run Vista Upgrade Advisor and it never mentioned this PCI card. I never would have figured it out, and I would have assumed that Vista would have installed and just let me know that this device was not compatible. I never would have thought that ANY device would stop it from installing. I'm still scratching my head!
