I'm trying to install Vista Home Premium on my HP Pavilion 8130 laptop (Win MCE 2005, Turion64, 1g memory). I updated to the latest bios and drivers from the HP web site. The Vista upgrade advisor says that everything is good to go. I've tried upgrading about 6 times and get the same error every time at the 59% point of the final step (completing upgrade): Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C:\\Windows\system\oobe\setup.exe. This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
I've removed Norton and all antivirus programs. I was on the phone with Microsoft for an hour to no avail (they had me disable all startup programs and devices but the same thing happened). What the heck is the problem? I really don't want to wipe the drive and start all over again. Thanks.

Try a clean install. In the event that your "upgrade" includes an incompatible driver or software - Vista is likely to crash. So a clean install will remove this from the possible causes.

Hello gdl39 and welcome to the Board,

Norton versions earlier than the very latest will not run on Vista. I know you write that you removed Norton, but not that simple. Some of it is still on your system. Go to the Symantec site and get a removal tool for it.

And what and how many AV's are you running? Very few of them run on Vista as well.

You're best bet as usasma has posted is to clean intall and then look for compatable software.

    Regards - Charles
