Last night I connected a new desktop computer with Vista Home Premium. The computer has not yet been started, as I wanted to make sure my initial setup choices allow me to create a home network through a router using Ethernet cables with another Vista Basic laptop and xp Home edition desktop so I can share files/printer at home.
I realize workgroups on xP and Vista must have the same name and NTFS file system.
    I've never set up a network .
What network option(private, public, etc) should I choose for xP and Vista?
Any other options on initial setup I should consider BEFORE starting Vista and registering it?

Any guidance in basic terms would be appreciated.

Within Vista you would want to make sure that the network profile is set to home to allow sharing and computer discovery.

If you can be bothered to have a quick read this article/guide will help you:
