Hi dodopie, are you running MSE (MicroSoft Security Essentials) as your AV?
If so, MSE will turn off Defender. Apparently they will clash and I've got MSE running on my comp, and if I click on Windows Defender in Programs, it shows it is Turned Off.

There may be another answer to your problem as I haven't experienced it.
When trying to un-install Software, use the Software un-install first. If that doesn't work, then use Control Panel > Programs and Features. Neil.

Do you mean "recent" programs are appearing on the Start Menu? You can turn off "recent programs" appearing by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Properties.

I'm not quite sure what (or where) you mean by "take things off... "

I'm under the impression that when this computer starts up, there are programs that load on startup, i'm trying to get rid of the ones i dont use so my computer will run faster

Apart from Msconfig I would suggest installing WinPatrol which apart from monitoring changes to the system also has the ability to control startup items. I've used it for years.
