Hello, I have started this thread because I have been experiencing problems with Vista as of about an hour ago. While I was playing a game (StepMania, which I've been playing on this laptop daily since I bought it), my computer randomly locked up, and I had to hard reset. I was not browsing the internet when this occurred, and I was in the final stages of cleaning my computer from a malware attack, and everything seemed to be working fine up until my laptop crashed. I've put the malware cleansing on hold until this is sorted out.

Now, every time I boot Vista, about 30 seconds after the welcome screen appears (even if I haven't typed in my password yet), the computer locks up, and all I can do is hard reset. The mouse can move, but clicking does nothing.

I have Windows 7 installed as a dual boot, and it loads fine; I would really like to get Vista running again, though, as that's what I'm more comfortable with using, and most of my programs are installed on and configured for Vista. I am posting this from my laptop right now, using Windows 7.

I really don't know where to start when it comes to fixing errors with my computer, but I did run CHKDSK and it seemed to perform quite a few more actions than I've normally seen it do. Should I post a log that it created, and if so, where would that log be located?

    Thank you for your time.

Since your Malware thread hasn't been resolved yet, continue there, as Malware is a likely cause/contributor.

Broni has declared my computer at this point to be malware-free.

Anyway, here's what I've done today to try to fix this problem myself, because it's very important that I get Vista running again for some programs that I need, like Microsoft Office.

    1. I tried booting Vista in safe mode, and it worked; I tried ComboFix and OTL, but they didn't fix the booting problem.

    2. During my next period at college, I started experiencing bluescreens while booting Vista, and safe mode would no longer boot; it would hang while loading BtHidBus.sys and then restart every time, and it still does. After loading Windows 7 and trying to access the C drive, it said it was corrupted and inaccessible. (however it could still load partially when I attempted to boot Vista, so it was certainly readable to some extent)

    3. Later I borrowed a Vista install disk from my friend (my laptop had Vista pre-installed, but it did not come with a CD for Vista), and after booting it from the CD, I tried accessing C with Command Prompt, but it gave me the same "corrupted and unreadable" message. I then ran CHKDSK.exe with write permission. It did quite a few fixes, for about an hour and a half. It said afterwards however, that a log file was unable to be created. (with attribute 50, or at least it said something about some parameter "50 ")

    4. I then attempted to run a repair install with the Vista disk, but it said it couldn't repair the system files. After the CHKDSK fix though, I could at least access and copy files from the Command Prompt. I then backed up the last remaining personal files from my C drive to my D drive.

    5. After this, I still couldn't boot Vista even in safe mode, and in Windows 7 it still says the C drive is inaccessible, but this time because of "Access denied ", even though I am on the administrator account. However, the files I backed up from C in Command Prompt are still there in the D drive, which is good. :)

I'm starting to wonder if a clean install of Vista on the HD would be the best thing to do. If there's anything I could at least try though, I'll do whatever could possibly fix this problem without reformatting.

Hi Goldensunboy. Have you tried running Startup Repair from the Vista DVD?

If you have then you could try performing a repair install of Vista which should hopefully make your Vista installation boot again. Take a look here, How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista.
