I have recently purchased a HP dv9000 laptop for my wife and vista continually crashes, taking me to the blue screen and showing an error number which is:
    IRLQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x00000000, 0x0000001B, 0x00000000, 0x81c28928.

This has been happening for some time, regardless of updates.

Looking at the Microsoft Knowledgebase, it mostly refers to a particular occurrence, that is, you notice that it happens when do a particular task. Can you (she) identify that task? It might be accessing particular hardware (eg. graphics, audio, network, printing, etc).

Can she make the crash happen? What does she do that causes it?

Me, I would disconnect any connected devices (USB, Firewire, PCMCIA). Any difference?

Basics? Look up the model at the HP website. Check for, and install, any updated drivers.
If you have installed drivers and their software for any added hardware, uninstall and reinstall those, but investigate if there may be be updates for Vista at their website.

See if the titles of these ring any bells:
    http://support.microsoft.com/search...adv=1&query=irql_not_less_or_equal 0x00000000

Is the system still under warranty? It may be an actual fault in the hardware. Contact HP and explain the problem before the warranty runs out and keep a record of the email/contact. If you go through technical support, backup your data, since it may well involve a reinstall.

You are a beginner. You will need to read lots of basic information. The problem appears that it could be a difficult one. Of course, post back here with any questions (search these forums :)).
