It seems (though I am not certain) that it can't detect my NIC (3Com 3C905tx).

Swap back to XP and connect straight through. I checked settings and the network connections are set to auto detect...

Could not find a "device manager" either to check installed devices...

    Any ideas?

Take a deep breath and go ....

Start > Control Panel (classic view) > System > Advanced System Settings > System Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.

    :)

Thanks Pete - I will try tomorrow as I had to remove the HDD because it wont fit in my box (gets in way of the power lead to the gfx card :( )

Liked the look of Vista though - very nice, though seemed quite slow...

:) I have actually upgraded some since then, got 2gig RAM etc - must amend siggy.

"Slow" is possibly mis-leading - in general it seemed fine, but some actions and clicks got no response or a delayed response giving the impression of a system running slowly. When I get more time I will run some diagnostics to get a better feel for the whole system.

If you have lots of files on the system, it could be that the Indexer (for Search) is using a lot of CPU time for it's initial database build.

Try installing it manually by using the add new hardware thing in the control panel. I had the same problem with mine. I did it manually. I selected my card, and Vista told me something about it "might not work properly" as it could not detect it. I told it to install it anyway and it's worked ever since (Vista had drivers for it). I thought it kind of odd that Vista comes with drivers for the card but was unable to detect it. Not sure what that was all about.
