Since migrating to vista I 've lost my favourite player for well over four months now. I installed all the 7.1.x versions of itunes and only on the very first installation did it run a couple of times or so. The supposedly more vista friendly 7.1.5 always crushed and the fully compatible 7.2 is again crushing from point 0. I 'm pretty hopeless so if anyone could provide any advice, I 've un and reinstalled a few times already but to no avail. Vista's error checking is predictably enough a waste of time, it checks and checks and checks and reports nothing other than that ms will contact me for details of the problem if they come up with anything, yeah right. I also done a lot of research on the net for this, but again to no avail, right now most people are just having problems connecting ipods or problems with vista 64.

    So, I am all ears.

Thanks very much, love your site btw, has helped me a lot many times.

Hi, not that I might be able to supply a quick fix, but what exactly happens? Is there an error generated at startup or when you try to use the iTunes program? Has there been any difference between the different versions you have installed or do they all do the same thing?

You say that the latest version is the most Vista friendly, so Apple thinks it should work. I would look at any other software that does the same function...a player. I would expect that another player may be blocking/conflicting with it. For example, Nero has a player if you choose to install it. Has your computer been supplied with some sort of player? When you say player, is it for audio only or for both audio and visual?

Look for other software that may do a similar task, uninstall it or work out how to make it compatible with iTunes. I would consider Windows Media Player last since version 7.2 is "compatible ", but I would not disregard it.

Also investigate CODECS. These are required by the player to run different types of media files.

Matt, thanks for your reply first of all, I always find people who take the time to reply to anonymous internet forums very commendable to say the least.

The error is generated whenever I try to use itunes. When I first installed windows vista itunes 7.1.x run for a couple of times and hasn't run since. I 've tried previous versions of itunes from 6.x to 7.x but no one of these work either.

My computer didn't come with anything pre-installed but I 've put vlc media player and real player on (as well as windows media player classic) but I don't see how these could interfere with itunes...Vlc seems the safest of all, and real player I installed after itunes. Can you explain how another player might interfere since, I mean, if you don't run the player there's no code in the memory that can interfere with itunes, right?

I've installed a couple of codec packs, free codec packs with the basics and some more, I 'll try uninstalling these.

From what I can gather it will be a pretty tiresome bussiness taking one program down after another to see if they interfere with itunes, I hope it's not fruitless at the end.

I am dissapointed with a lot of things in vista (As I expected I would be), and another frustration are the error messages which are not informative at all, you get all that "windows is looking for a solution to the probem" or "windows has not found a solution but will notify you" (excuse my french) ****, but they ultimately don't come up with anything. Whatever error reporting is helpful, it's too obvious too, and whatever isn't obvious isn't reported in any helpful way.

Thanks for your help though again.

That's OK Bobby. I probably can't add much more than I said originally.
Similar programs use similar sets of files. One program might use a specific version of a file, but stops working when another program is installed and changes the file version. This is what I might suppose is happening in your case.

You have expended quite a lot of energy reinstalling iTunes, but I doesn't look like it will solve the problem. Another thing may be that even if you uninstall the other players, depending on their uninstallation system, it may not "revert" everything back to the way it was originally

I am not a big fan of Real Player. I have had some battles with it in the past and I found it to be invasive and controlling. You will see people have dislikes of particular programs. Real Player is one of mine, along with things like Norton, AOL and a few others.

I would not necessarily blame Vista until I investigated those other players, although, I suppose like you, I have had quite a few headaches getting Vista running smoothly.
