Upgraded from Vista Home Premium 64 to Windows 7 Home Premium 64. Researched upgrade thoroughly, I thought. Got HP Advisor and Upgrade disks from HP; believed I covered all bases. Upgrade OK.

HP then instructed me to download and install HP SoftPaqs SP44615, 44429, 44351, 44350, 44352, 46191,44353. HP instructions were to uninstall (example: CyberLink)before running SoftPaq #SP44353 which was supposed to install the latest CyberLink version. I went to CP, tried to uninstall CyberLink. During uninstall process, a dialog box popped up that said "Do you want to uninstall this program?" I of course clicked on 'yes' at which point another dialog box popped up saying "Please wait for program to uninstall before proceeding" and stopped the uninstall process. In effect, Control Panel cannot uninstall any of the MediaSmart or CyberLink programs.

Responses during uninstall attempts on LabelPrint, Power2Go, Power Director, MediaSmart, were error messages stating "Product Definition File Lost."

Discussions with HP results: Either restore system or use Recovery disks & restore to original OS-Vista 64. HP Tech Support: "HP is working on problem." No idea when it will be fixed.

My questions: Can I uninstall MediaSmart and CyberLink with 3rd party uninstall software, and hope SoftPaqs work afterwards? Or can I uninstall and replace with open source programs or other substitutes? So far, I can't play DVDs. That's the only problem aside from frequent "Product Definition Files Lost" dialog boxes. Any ideas?

It sounds like your Win7 install went fine, but HP's software didn't like it. DVD's? Windows Media Player is very good. I am not sure what all those HP programs are for, but I can say that there are good freeware programs to do just about anything. What else do you need? PS- Make sure Win Media Player is enabled in Control Panel.

I'm not sure, but I suspect that in my preparation for the upgrade, I maybe neglected to get the latest Vista 64 updates to these various HP programs. I thought I made sure everything was up to date - but possibly wasn't thinking that MediaSmart and CyberLink would require anything beyond the HP-installed update program and the latest MS updates. Agonized over this upgrade to Win 7 for two weeks, thought all ducks were lined up. I'd hate to have to go back to Vista 64; have a lot of GiveawayoftheDay programs on the system. Evidently HP will not provide MediaSmart and CyberLink to replace and upgrade these damaged files. Thank you for the suggestion re: Windows Media Player.
