I have a router via a Etherent cable onto my main PC (desktop) and a wireless card on a laptop all works okay (eventually) am I correct in saying that the McAfee Firewall/Virus Protection software installed on the desktop PC would also have to be installed on my laptop to give protection for the laptop.

I have been told that the laptop would still be protected but I am not so sure as the main PC (desktop) could be turned off.

    Absolutely not!!

Virus software must be installed on each individual machine and updated individually also.

Personal firewalls on the other hand are not an absolute nessessity behind a router.

    That was quick!
As I thought, will still keep firewall installed on Laptop as an extra protection.
