virus protection program

I have ME and netscape communicator---I want to change virus protection programs--I have Mycafee and I'm not thrilled with it to say the least---
I have been told that Norton was a good choice--Any comments about that or other virus protection programs--I think I'll take a $20.00 loss and make a switch,still have a year left on my contract with Mycafee---Can I just go to add/remove and take Mycafee out and install a new virus program---I want Mycafee out for good---

I've used Mcafee, but I really enjoy Norton and the related products.
