virus or malware slowing down my laptop

hi

i've been noticing lately that my laptop has been running real slow and it affects the firefox and aim. my laptop is a Windows Vista. i don't know if it's a virus or anything else. i tried using symantec endpoint scan and it'll find nothing. also, for some reason, i can't update the symantec. it use to work back at home but now at school, it can't update certain things. (i have to use symantec for school otherwise i can't get access to the internet.)

my laptop only has zonealarm (paid for it) and AVG antivirus (but for some reason, i can't update the AVG because it says it can't get through to the website).

is there something wrong with my laptop? if so, i need help please.

I think your problem is with ZoneAlarm. If this is the first time it has connected to the school network, it has blocked all access as it has detected something strange and new.
From their support pages:
1) Open ZoneAlarm and click on the Firewall panel on the left.
2) Click on the Main tab.
3) Click on the Advanced button.
4) Under the Network Settings, check either the Include networks in the
Trusted Zone upon detection radio button or the Exclude networks in the
Trusted Zone upon detection.
5) Click OK.

i tried doing what you said but i got stuck at the part of clicking (checking the box) in the advance settings. all it has under security is "block trustedzone servers, block internetzone servers, allow uncommon protocols at high security, allow outgoing DNS/DHCP on trusted zone in high setting, allow outgoing DNS/DHCP in internet zone on high setting, lock host file, disable windows firewall, and filter ip traffic over 1394. "
