[Resolved] virus on my vista laptop.

    Hello guys/gals:

Realized several days ago that I have somehow got infected with Infostealer.Gampass trojan virus and I am unable to get rid of it.

I have tried NAV (I have a free subscription of 90 days that came with computer) who sees it but cannot delete it. I have tried NAV in safe mode. no luck.
Have tried Spybot, Superantispyware free detion and Malwarebytes'antimalware in both normal and safe mode with no success.

The only good thing about my situation is that the infection is on my laptop and so i have access to my desktop so i can still "function ".

    here is the HJT results.

I'm currently doing the "kaspersky online scanner" and will post results there. I'm also trying to get more information on what to do based on the other threads on this virus... but if anyone has enough patience to "hold my hand" and walk me through this process, that would be terrific!

    thanks in advance

Would anyone be willing to assist me in getting rid of this please?

    thanks in advance,

    Hi jojo69

Is Norton the program that is giving you the warning?

    If so please do this.

Please follow the instructions below to download and run the Norton Scanner, Make sure that no other applications are open after you download the file.

    1. Create a new folder on your desktop and name it "Norton Scanner. "

    2. Using Internet Explorer, click on the link below to access the Norton Scanner. Choose "Save File" and save it to the Norton scanner folder on your Desktop.

    Norton Scanner

    3. Double-click on the "Norton Security Scan" file and save the extracted files to the folder you created on your desktop.

    4. When all of the files have be decompressed, double-click on the file "NSS" to launch the Norton Security Scanner.

    5. Read and accept the License agreement.

    6. Choose "Full System Scan" and then select "Start Scan." The scanner will then download the updated definition files and will scan all of the files on your computer. Please NOTE, depending on how many files are on your system, the scan may take a while. When the scan is complete, click on the "Action Required" tab and follow the instructions.

Let me know if you still receive the warning message after doing the above.

    Thanks
    Geri

no. When i look for the file with the Windows search option, it finds it! Windows seems to indicate that it finds the file in the recycle bin. For example, if i right click on the file, it it will offer to "restore" it amongst other options. Which makes me think it's in the bin but it's not visible. When i click on "open file location" it opens the following location:
    mycomputer/c:/$recycle.bin

there is nothing there that i see. I just realized that under recycle bin properties it shows there is "1 files ", and '129 bytes" of space used.

I was thinking about trying to "zero" or really empty the bin using this soft I found (Supershredder by AnalogX) but once open I can't drag/drop the file because there is no visible file to drag in the /$recycle.bin folder...

which, is that "$recycle.bin" even a legit folder?

    Hi
    Go here.
    C:\RECYCLER

Open the folder and look in there. if there delete the file.

Just so you know, it is no threat to the system being in the recycle bin.

    Hi
    Oh yeah vista.

    Please do this.

    1. Open an elevated Command Prompt window.
To open an elevated Command Prompt, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

    2. Type or copy and paste the following command and press ENTER:
    rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin

Let me know if the warning goes away.

yeah vista is a pain! I have my good old xp on my desktop thank god!
Anywayz, after following your suggestions, I didn't see any other line or command prompt telling me anything. I went ahead and closed it and launched Norton and did a scan. Nothing showed up! :)

    I think it's finally gone!

THank You So Much Geri for your time and efforts!
    It was very much appreciated!
