 THIS FORUM IS ONLY TO APPLY TO UK CUSTOMERS ON VIRGIN MEDIA

I need to ask this question ...it might sound silly on my part? ...but here it goes!!

At present i am with the above provider and have the 'XL' package. That's 10MB. I have received via post and been informed by Virgin Media, that they are going to be upgrading the bandwith from 10MB to 20MB in May. At present my cable modem is connected via 'USB Connection', not 'Ethernet'. When hovering the mouse over the Internet Connection in Taskbar ...it currently displays it as '12MB'. Am i going to incur a problem in being able to reach the full increment speed of '20MB?'.

If 'yes' ...what would i need to do to reach the that 'FULL' incremented speed? Or do i not worry about anything??

Probably not, but you may well not reach that speed (which is all rather academic anyway as a slow server at the other end will not match that speed) as it inevitably depends on distance from the exchange, line quality, etc.

My ISP recently increased my speed from 2 Mbps to 8 Mbps - I only get 4 Mbps no doubt due to the factors noted above and in all honesty I see no real wotld increase in my surfing speed. I can download at 4 Mbps if the server at the other end is capable, but equally I have downloaded at a measley 20 - 50 Kbps from some servers - Nero is one of them.

Seriously I would not lose any sleep over this and equally would not expect to get the full speed boost. If new equipment was needed I feel sure that there would be info on the Virgin site.

possibly, because that 12mb connection rate is the connection rate from your comp to the cable modem, it is NOT your internet connection rate because currently your internet rate is 10 mb.

Most cable modems support up to 38 mb downstream and 30 mb upstream. The rates will vary comp to comp, usb 1.1 & usb 2.0. Ethernet has always been better than usb for networking.

fyi- MB = MegaBytes and mb = megabits. Internet rates are measured in mb.

    Solitaire Machines

It is always amazing that many if not most of the numbers quoted in our world of computers are fictional if not fraudulent.
I was just discussing yesterday that many people get high end computers and yet if you actually discuss their computer use you can discover that many of these people if asked will tell you that the main use of their computer is for "solitaire ".
Believe it or not they are quite proud of this.
I had one idiot women phone me up and tell me that her computer expert friend had come over and told her that "she needed a new tower as her computer was very slow for solitaire ".
This is the same expert who phoned me demanding that his new computer was not working. Very insistent.
It turned out that the problem was that this was that even though he had had the computer 3 months the internet had just been connected . The computer on its first run throughs of setup on the internet had informed him that he had entered a "secure area ". He thought that he was entering somewhere very illegal like fort knox and shut off the computer immeadiately.
    Lots of luck.
