I have a brand new 1GB Viking memory stick PC133R-333-542-Z.
It only beeps when mounted in the memory slot of my Compaq Evo Desktop D300. (1.7 GHz)
Does anyone know this kind of memory is not suitable for this mainboard?
    Thanks in advance for answering.
    Rob

    robbiep53 - Welcome to the Board :)

If you run through the Crucial Memory selector at Crucial you will see that the max module size that the motherboard can accomodate is 512 Mb.

    Thank you for the response.
I've run Crucial and it states 3 x 512 MB can be added.
But it also states that the maximum memory capacity = 3.072 MB.
How does this match with only 3 memorybanks?

I would imagine that is a typo - to confirm check out your computer specs at the Compaq website.

The Compaq reference states that 1 GB per slot with a max. of 3 GB can be used.

HP/Compaqs are picky when it comes to memory modules. You need to get compatible sticks.

The price of SDRAM has climbed because of it being outdated.
