No matter what dvd viewer I use, every time I try to play a DVD the program crashes. The little FBI warnings and everything pass fine, but as soon as it starts trying to play sound the program crashes with one of those error reporting messages with useless information. I'm pretty sure that the problem is from a corrupted audio codec, but I have no idea which one and how to find the codec installer. I'd appreciate any advice. thanks.

Take a look in Event Viewer and see if any errors are registered relating to DVD under either Application or System. Double click the error line to bring up a detail box - click on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste the details here.

The info will surely mean something to someone on the Board.

I'll do that when I get home, first though i'll try a sfc /scannow and see if that'll fix anything, i should've thought of that yesterday. either way i'll post back later.

alright i fixed the problem, it never occured to me to look in the event viewer, but it said something was wrong with ac3audio.ax, so i copied it to a backup folder and deleted it. Windows automatically added a new, working, one and everything works great.
