I've tried two different monitors, but neither is displaying anything with my PC even following a reboot. (The monitors work ok with my other PC.) I guess it could be the video adapter, but are there any other possibilities I should check out or procedures I should follow before investing in a video card? Thanks.

Have you changed any hardware or did this just happen?

Maybe we can read the signs. If it is the graphics/video adapter, then you will see the HDD LED running, indicating that it is booting into Windows, just not showing anything on the screen.

Do you see any drive LEDs come on and stay on?

No beeps or just one beep?

If no LEDs flash, it may be a RAM problem.

You could try pulling out and reseating the graphics card (if it is a card and not part of the motherboard...on-board graphics), also clean the card's connectors with a soft pencil eraser.
