Last night I tried to add some memory to my dell dimension desk top pc running windows xp professional. After I opened up the pc and removed the current memory that was in there I realized the memory I was going to add from another pc was not the same as the one in the dell. When I put the old memory back in the pc the comp will not boot up any more and the monitor will not go on. Is it the memory that has been damaged? Will buying new memory and putting it in solve this issue? Or is it the Video card that connects the monitor to the pc that had been damaged. I have tried to take the memory out over and over and i even bought new memory and no luck. I am debating on geting a new video card.I can not figure out why the computer will not boot. I have checked every cable and nothing.

    Let's start from square 1 :)

When you power up the computer do any of the lights come on on the front of the tower (or laptop)?

Do you hear any BIOS beeps?

When you look at the motherboard with the power switched on at the wall socket, but not on the case of the computer is there a green led lit up (not all boards have this)?

If no lights are visible check the power connections to the motherboard.

The memory module slots are generally very close to the socket for the 20/24 pin plug from the power supply - have you checked this? Pull it out and reseat it.
