I just did a clean install of win 98 on this Dell Dimension XPS R350. It was previously running Win 2000. The video was excellent at 32 bit. Now for some reason all I can get is 16 or 2 colors. Device Mgr says the display adapter is STD PCI graphics adapter [VGA]. The card that is installed is a Diamond Multimedia inc. -- Fire GL 1000 Pro. I have the drivers for the card but I think the card is just not being recognized. If it was Id be able to install the correct drivers. Ive tried removing the adpater in Device mgr but on a reboot it just wants to install the same VGA adapter. I even went into system config and checked around although I must admit I dont know what im looking for. So I set everything back to the defaults. I even reset with the system M/B jumper. What am I doing wrong here???
Thanx

Hi

let it go in as standard VGA (seems you have little option!), then check in Device Manager to see
- is there a yellow exclamation mark;
- are there any unrecognised devices listed

also look for any yellow !'s or red Xs

regarding the drivers you have for the card: is there an actual "Setup" file for the drivers; or is it just a collection of files (but nothing called setup), pls

best wishes, HJ

video card not recognized

When I do that there are no trouble marks yellow or red next to the Display Adapters.
I do have under "Other Devices" yellow ? marks next to PCI multimedia audio device and under "System Devices" yellow ! next to Composite Power Source
The drivers are just a collection of files that I unzipped. There are three small .EXE files but they all state that they are "not a valid win32 application "

...I was rather hoping for an unknown device
hmm, that doesn't sound marvellous. Were these from Diamond or from someplace else, pls?
Were there any INF files in the collection which you unzipped, pls?

I've found a ~5MB (presumed self-extracting EXE), looks probably the right one from Diamond, currently am d/l it to see what gives; on dialup so pls bear with me another 20 mins; with any decent luck it should yield the numbers we can use to check that your BIOS has "seen" the card OK at bootup (hopefully you see the list of PCI devices briefly during POST).

best wishes, HJ.

Hi Pearlhouse

the file I found at Diamond* self-extracts to a really together-looking driver package, which includes a Setup file :)

* this link will probably chuck you into the software agreement page, if so agree ;) and return to the download page

perhaps have a go with that driver instead?

(DIAMOND FIRE-GL WIN 9X NT4 VER 1000 PRO DRIVER 5.06 MB 12-Jun-06)

==

If you want to check that your BIOS has "seen" the card OK at bootup (assuming you can see the PCI device list), the numbers you are looking for are:
mfr: 104C, device: 3D07

hint: have your finger ready on the "Pause" key, with luck will stall the display to give you a chance to read it; un-pause with the Return key

ooops sorry it's actually called "INSTALL.EXE" not "SETUP.EXE" one of these days I'll learn to read the screen in front of me (hoping)

run the EXE you get from Diamond, it self-extracts, look for a subfolder called INSTALL, INSTALL.EXE is in that folder

umm. You could have worked that one out yourself, couldn't you :D

Success!!!

:) Hey it worked wow I dont believe it.
My problem was I did not see the "PRO" driver I was using the driver without the word PRO.
Do you think this would work if I went back to Win Me and tryed this driver. I didnt see a specific one for win Me. I liked ME much better than 98.
Im setting this PC up for somebody else and Im thinking the newer the OS the better.
WOW THANKS AGAIN I CANT BELIEVE IT.
I had a lot of hours in this so Im grateful that you were able to guide be in the right direction. That one little word PRO! Sometimes its right in front of your eyes and you dont see it.
THANX
THANX
I still have a couple more drivers to go now.
Sound and then the NIC card.
If I need more help can I ad to this thread or think I should start a new one?

Please start a new thread if your question is not related to the video card.

:) great news

yes, most probably.

(do you have any disc(s) that came with the computer)

if you hit problems with the sound or NIC, it would be better to start a new thread (the title of this one says "video "; the closer the title describes your problem, the better pickup you get from folks having a quick look)

(edit: I see Pete's most correctly pointed that out during the couple of hours since I first tried to put this up - getting disconnected  every couple of minutes at times, I gave up the unequal struggle earlier on)

let's hope you don't !

thanks for posting back the successful outcome

best wishes, HJ
