    SPECS
    w98SE | 300 MHz | 128MB | AMD K6/Athlon | PCI slot interface - (VGA monitor).

Video card on Wife's 10 year computer died.
Have found compatible Vcard (ATI or nNvida chip sets), with 3 sizes per card memory.
The average memory to price range is as follows ....
    8MB - $15 (current size)
    32MB - $20
    64MB - $30
From purely a memory to performance view, (other than gaming), will more video card memory have any real advantages?? Loading pages faster, faster screen fill is nice even when your reading your email, normal browsing.

My choice would be a 32 Mb card for the extra $5 - this will be more than adequate for anything your wife wants to throw at it with the exception of serious games. FWIW I ran Photoshop for many years on a 32 Mb dual head Matrox card with no downside.

The video response will be affected by speed the RAMDAC (graphics processor) - faster = better and more video RAM will permit the display of more colours.

    Thanks Pete :)
I was thinking the 32MB Vcard would be the sweet spot for this old, but still usable computer ...
it just keeps going and going.
The card I'm going with ... RAGE 128 PRO.
The 64MB alternate ... HIS - Radeon 7000 64MB 64-bit DDR PCI Video Card . (click on "Specifications tab" - screen right). The 64MB card does provide VGA, DVI, and S-Video Out connections, but has a lower clock speed.

Unless you need the options in the HIS card I would stick with the Rage 128 PRO.

And, I never liked those ATI Rage Pro cards. Although similarly dated, the 7000 Radeon was a better card. A few years back, I bought a bunch of 32MB Rage Pro cards from a local vendor because the price as right - I kept one and used it in a budget build - all the rest were returned.

Not saying its a bad choice for that machine, just that its not as good a choice as the 7000. Go over to ComputerGeeks.com and check out their older video cards - sometimes one can steal a deal.

    ;)

edit: Here's a card to check out.

Thanks for the card suggestion Rockster2U at Geek, but unfortunately it is a AGP interface, my old box only has PCI.
Rage Vcard should be here tomorrow, so I'm commited. What was the base problem ... stability, performance, short life?? Any install suggestions I should be aware of?

Sorry Dennis, I thought you were AGP. The Rage Pro cards I didn't like were half height 32MB cheapo's - even at that time. I think they were somewhere around $20-25. I got an error after installing a security patch if I recall correctly. Had to remove the update and used to encounter this on other machines with that GPU. It wasn't well documented but it was documented if want to google it. Hopefully, you will not experience the same.

My guess is, either MS or ATI has fixed this issue by now as its been about 3-4 years.

    ;)

    And higher resolutions.

When I buy a video card to simply use as part of my "test bench ", I end up getting some 32MB ATI 9xxx card.
