I recently downloaded a Caller ID program.
When asked to restart all worked well.
When I turned on this am. my desktop screen flickerd, and all my
    created folder icons changed.
Clicking on Classic Icons in the folder options window, will not do anything. I removed the ID software, did'nt help.
Perhaps something in my registry controls this.
I hate to restore a previous registry, as all my since backup work
    will be removed.
    Can anyone help me please?

Travlur--goddez1's suggestion about TweakUI should work, but in case the direction
"Use tweakui>paranoia tab>repair icons" leaves you searching, it is the Repair tab|Rebuild Icons.

    Maybe Not so very unusual

    Thanks for the help.
Never did find "shelliconscache ". (W/98SE)
    TweakUI did the trick.
    Learn something everyday.
Never encountered this problem in 7 yrs, of fiddling.
Have increased icon cache from 500 to 2000 so will probably
    never see it again.

    Thanks Again.

I'm so glad this worked for you and all is well.

I guess I should have mentioned that you have to make sure you have folder view options set to allow the view of system and hidden folders. See:
Make sure you have the ability to view hidden files by adjusting preference options in....
1>Click on My Computer icon or if in explorer>toolbar>view
    2>click on toolbars "View" category
    3>click on "Folder options "
    4>click on "View" Tab:
5>and scroll to the [Hidden Files] section and enable or disable the options below by unchecking or checking as designated:
"Do Not show hidden files "=unchecked
"Do not show hidden or system folders "=unchecked
    "Show all Files "= checked
"hide file extensions for known files "=unchecked

And that file is "shelliconcache" not shelliconscache. Located in c:\windows.
