    Computer - Gateway E 4200 450MHz Pent III
    OS - Windows 98 SE
    IE - 6.0

I can get onto the Internet but when I go to close a pop-up page I start getting these Illegal Operations errors.
Most commonly the vbscript.dll and jscript.dll. Occasionally There will be the dispex.dll and the scrrun.dll error.
I've tried updating the vbscript version 5.5 with no success.
I've tried repairing IE6.0 a couple times with no success.
I tried downloading the sp1 for IE 6.0 but I am unable to download because this is one of those times I get the vbscript.dll error and it closes down.
I've tried downloading and installing a patch 'q316059' but when I try to execute it it tells me I need IE 6.0.
    I have already have 6.0.

I've hunted but have come up empty. I need help.
Here is a copy of two errors I am getting:

I wonder if you have your options:security in IE set to high and a lower setting will allow active scripting?

Check on your enables and disables. A look see at your options:advanced tab wouldn't hurt either.

    ======
In any case all those files [4 mentioned]are most definitely files related to scripting.

    Hello JBaldy

Invalid page fault is a memory problem! It can mean bad memory,or a program that tries to write to used or protected memory or to the page (Swapfile) which is disk space that windows treats as memory.

Most times it is the swap file! I beleive this is your problem! Below is the proceedure to do a deep cleanup! But 1st let us check a couple other things!

Do a Ctrl Alt Del! See what is running! You could have spy/adware. Do you know what all of these are?

What virus scanner do you use ,is it up to date? Have you done a "FULL" virus scan! If not do so!

Do you have Aaware with the latest defs? If so run it in deep scan! If you don't have it get it! http://www.lavasoft.de/. Do this after the cleanup below!

    Let's do a shotgun cleanup!

First reboot hit F8 or hold the ctrl key to get to the windows BOOT MENU.

Pick command prompt only! Type cd\ {enter} In the root of c:

    type del *.swp {enter}

this will delete the windows swap file. Do not worry it will automatically recreate when you boot back to windows but will be clean and empty!

If it says file not found cd to c:\windows and do the same there, (del *.swp) it can be in either or both places! If you have set your swap file to another drive in device manager then find it and delete it!

Reboot! Hit F8 or ctrl again! This time choose safe mode!

Once windows is up use MY COMPUTER and browse to c:\windows\temp!

When you are there the address bar will show the path above!
Hit ctrl A, this will highlite all files. Hit del and del all! If it gives any warning about this being a program answer yes del anyway! If it tells you there are hidden or readonly files it will give instructions on how to change the view! Do so and delete them also!

Next (do not open Internet explorer) but go to control panel and find internet options and on the page that appears pick delete files and then also delete all offline content!

On same page at bottom clear history! Optional!

    Then exit control panel!

    Empty recycle bin!

Reboot into Full normal mode and see if problem persists!

This cleanup proceedure will help over all performance and free disk space! May not cure your problem but will help everything else and may make it easier to find the real problem I believe it to be the cure!

    Let us know either way!

    Mike

    Mike,
First of all I tried the Vbscript update 5.6 as suggested by markp62 but it didn't help.

ctrl alt del showed things I never seen before. In msconfig I disable most items that I felt were not needed to be running.
Now ctrl alt del shows 4 items, Rnaapp, Systray, Rundll, Explorer.

I probably should have mentioned that I just bought this system with no OS. When I got the computer I had to load everything. I just finished it and set it up for my wife and kids this past Friday 10-3-02. I know my kids set up AIM, YAHOO messenger as well as MSN messenger. Other than that it hasn't been used much at all.

I also upgraded the memory from the original 128MG to 384MB which is max for this unit. So what you said about bad memory bothers me because it is new and it would be just my luck that I have bad memory.

I loaded windows 98 and then upgraded to win98SE. I had the software for the previous computer they used.
I did have IE4.0 which came with the OS. I upgraded that directly to IE6.0. Should I have not jumped directly to 6.0 but instead upgaded by version??

Anyway, I'm telling you this because what you suggested I do did not help. But now when I close and IE window I get an error but it wants me to send the report to Microsoft. I don't have a problem with that but it happens all the time.

I wonder, should I just format or fdisk and start all over?? It is not like I have a lot of data to loose. The hardest thing for me was getting everything installed.

I reall do appreciate the help you provided.
I think I'll wait until tomorrow before I decide to redo everything.

    Jeff.

    Hello Jeff

Just came in! If I had known the OS had just been installed I would not have put you thru such an agressive cleanup!

This cleanup is for computers that have been used for some time and not cleaned!

Ok, do you get the same page fault error or has it changed to only the error you mention in your last post!

I see you are on line now, give me 10 minutes and I will give you the site to try something else!

    Mike

    Mike,
I must have missed you 10/5/02. I didn't know you were on.
I tried to log back on 10/6/02 but I kept getting messages that the web page was down or there were problems.

I should have mentioned the fact that the OS was recently installed, I just didn't think about it.

After many attempts I decided to go ahead and re-format. After about 2 hours of re-installing everything, the computer was back up and operating just fine.

I left IE at 5.0 because that is what win98SE came with.
I may try upgrading another time. Do you have any pros or cons for IE 6.1? Should I upgrade incrementally?

I appreciate all the help. I just wish I knew whether or not the scrrun.dll update would have worked. It is with 2 r's, right?

    Once again, THANKS!
    Jeff

    Glad all is OK now!

Try to get some kind of Image backup now!

    The BBS was down!

I would recommend an upgrade to IE 5.5 SP2.
