I have Win98. and a 3Com V90 modem. but i didnt know the ID of my modem. I downloaded the moden identification unit and when I ran it , it said no modem is detected on my system. Thats a crock. It on port 2! But now how do i identify my modem so that I can see if it qualifies to be upgraded to the new V92?

Is there anyway to contact 3Com? Seems like they would be the best source, both to determine the ID of your modem and to answer your question.
If not, here is a site which diagnoses much of the hardware on your PC (I have no experience whether it will give you the specific info you want.)
    http://www.belarc.com/Download.html
And did you go into your Device Manager or run Start|Run|type msinfo32|click OK?
But, perhaps most importantly, does your ISP support v92? No point in upgrading if does not.
Some sites you may find useful
    http://www.v92.com/
    http://808hi.com/56k/index.htm
See left panel in the latter.

By you first post stating that no Modem was found I would strongly suggest you forget messing with it.

If it is an Internal PCI WinModem type Windows may have it installed at some address that the Modem ID unit may not find it.

In other words, if it an't broke I would not try to fix it. Especailly and Internal PCI Modem. They are very easily broken and can be very tuff to repair.

Take off the case of your computer and look for a model name and number on the modem card. Or find the FCC ID number on it and go to drivershq.com and do a search with that.
I believe you are trying to find out if your modem can be flashed as an upgrade. A incorrectly identified modem with the wrong flash software can render it inoperable. Are you sure you are up to this?

    Very good point.

I see you and I are thinking along the same lines.

    More smoke...

In addition to the above I might also add that unless the hardware can cope with v.92 then you may not get the full functionality of v.92

Functions like "Internet on hold" or "ring through" may not work, and v.92 doesn't up speeds up enough (if any) to be of added value over the performance you now have.

Many 56K Flex modem users saw a drop in performance after Upgrading to v.90 .
