Just downloaded Ultimate Windows Teak to my HP Windows 7. I wanted to eliminate those annoying arrows for shortcuts - but the box wont check, it is one of the main reasons I installed this app. What's going on??

Well I tried the regedit fix that is at MS community and all that does is put an ugly "empty" icon overlay on top of all my icons, real ugly, so I bit the bullet and just went back to the way it was, guess I'll have to get used to it. It used to be from Win 95 all the way to Vista even; the MS power pack that included Tweak UI would do all this. Not anymore. Too bad

Let me hunt around my notes to see if I can find the registry hack that I used to get rid my arrows.

    muruga ...

Ultimate Windows Tweaker didn't do it for me, either, but there are a couple of other Win7 tweakers that will ... the TweakNow PowerPack 2012 (shareware $15) and EnhanceMySe7en (free) should do it for you.

Open command prompt with administrator rights type this line statement REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v 29 /d %SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,50 /f Then Hit Enter. This will work on 64bit. I used it on my HP Laptop which is 64bit.

lj50 - I believe this is the same edit I found on MSCommunity - what it did on my system was simply overlay the ugly generic icon -is that correct or is this different in that it just removes the arrow while preserving the look of the icons? If it puts the generic ugly icon overlay that is not for me - thank you.

It removed the arrows. But I don't know why UWT v2.2 didn't work. I got the cmd prompt method to work on both my HP machines, delete the shell icons key in regedit and then got the UWT v2.2 method to work on both HP machines. After I performed the cmd prompt method I checked the registry Shell Icons key found 1 key in the right pane it read 29 empty.ico,0.

Glad you got it sorted out. Whatever it takes to accomplish a resolution. I might look into that program myself.

Shortcut arrows never bothered me. I like them because they let me discern between .exe's and links to .exe's. (I download all of my files to the desktop before erasing them or moving them to a storage folder)
