Windows XP Pro SP3 up to date

I'm trying to use several one line batch files employing nircmd to accomplish a few tasks such as turning off the monitor. I had them all working previously but I've reformatted my HD and done a clean install of XP Pro SP3.

Now all the bat files work but the cmd window remains open afterward for some of them. Sigh.

    Here's one where I have a problem:

    C:\apps\nircmd\nircmd.exe monitor off

I've tried adding each of the following lines one at a time:

    exit
    exit /b
    goto: eof

No joy. I also tried making a shortcut to the bat file and executing that; no joy. (BTW, a shortcut has the advantage that you can change its icon.)

    TIA.

For grins... add PAUSE for the second to last line. Then EXIT.... Just pressing the space bar would be quicker then typing exit manually.

    From nircmd's manual

    Could this be the problem?
