I have used XP to burn a CD multiple times before. Yesterday I started receiving a message telling me that there is no CD in the drive when I try to write out the temp files to the CD.

I have jumped through the following hoops:

    1. I checked to ensure there was a Recording Tab for the CD drive
    2. I made sure that Enable CD Recording on this drive was checked for the
    drive
    3. I verified the Drive Type registry key was set to 2
    4. I uninstalled the device in Device Manager and then ran it through the
    Add New Hardware wizard
    5. I verified that I have the most current driver file but then downloaded
and installed it anyway in case the driver was corrupt

This drive was used just last week to burn a CD. It still recognizes the drive and reads CD's.

    I am Dazed and Confused!

    Try this
    From here
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Have gotten new media (a different brand or a new batch)? Some new media cannot be read in old drives, for that you could find a firmware update for the drive, but you need to identify the model accurately. The media could be a faulty batch.

Do you have third-party burning programs installed? It/they may be causing it.

Matt, thanks so much for the reply. I am so grateful for this forum. You folks have in depth knowledge I don't find elsewhere and you respond to posts in a timely fashion. Thank you!

One thing I left out of my post was tht I tried multiple blank CD's and the problem continued. What bugged me though was that the system recognized the drive as a recording device, and it recognized a recorded CD in the drive, it just wouldn't recognize a blank CD in the drive. So, on a whim I went out and purchased a new batch of CD's and tht solved the problem. The entire batch of CD's that I was trying to use were bad and the new ones worked just fine.

    Sometimes I overthink the problem.
