I want to upgrade my CPU and want to know if I can accomplish what I want by the following method. First my present CPU is shown in My System. Because I am having periodic turn on problem (I believe my PS is failing) and my Bios and MB are over 5 years old. I want to get a new bare bones setup, that is a new MB, PS and Processor, along with a new Primary HD. I will load Window XP onto the new HD. Then I want to install my old HD and load my programs and desktop to the new CPU. Is this possible? The old HD will have Window XP (OS) on it as well but I can install it as the 2nd HD.

You can't just copy programs from another hard disk. They have to be individually installed. You can get your data by installing your old hard disk as 2nd hard disk.

So the only other alternative would be to do a PS and Motherboard swap and keep my present HD

You could always consider cloning your old hard drive to a new one using third party software such as Acronis - there are others, just Google.

I wonder if you would get a new motherboard that's compatible with your CPU as they are 5 years old. Better to upgrade both your motherboard & CPU at the same time for maximum compatibility and stability.

Yes, I would have opted for a new CPU along with the board. Now choosing a good board is a challenge. I was leaning toward a Asus M4A89 or Asus P6T. PeteC maybe you can tell me the differences in the P6T and P6T SE.
