I have a 2001 model HP desktop w/windows xp and a Hp 5500 series inkjet printer/copier/fax/scanner. It works very well. I have recently purchased a windows vista laptop and a linksys router. I have not been able to make the printer print from the laptop. Last week my wife bought a new laptop and it is a Hp with windows 7. are these two systems able to utilize the printer at the desk top without further purchases? and can anyone tell me how to connect the two? I was able to get both laptops hooked up and on the internet through the wireless router.

That printer has a network port (cat5) and you can connect the printer directly to the router. Disconnect any cables fro printer to computer.
    HP site for that printer

Download the software for the printer, it should have a utility for setting it up on the network.

Tony is right, the best approach is to make it a "network printer" with an ethernet cable from the router to the printer. The printer will pick up a local IP address from the router. That printer then has to be assigned on each computer so it can be recognized for printing.

Don't let the printer "pick up" an address else will have problems in the future if its ip address changes, and it will. Assign a static (unchanging) ip address.

    1. find out the ip address of your router (gateway).

    2. use the front panel of the printer to assign it a static ip address:
if router = 192.168.1.1 set printer to 192.168.1.2, if router = 192.168.0.1 set printer to 192.168.0.1, etc.

    3. test the printer connectivity by typing its ip address into address bar of Web browser, should get a status page or login page.

    4. to install the printer on XP, go to Control Panel > Printers & Faxes > remove existing Designjet 5500 > Add New Printer > LOCAL Printer > enter printer ip address > custom port > TCP/IP.

similar for Vista and windows 7.
