when I am away from home with my laptop, I can connect to the internet, either at a wireless place like hotel or airport or when connected to another modem with an ethernet connection and I can receive e-mail on outlook express but cannot send. Is there something I must do to receive e-mails?

When you're away, you're using a different ISP.

Most ISP's won't allow you to send another ISP's mail...You'll need to go to a web based mail...
