I would like to record songs of birds in the woods around our house. Can I use my computer to do this? Do I have to install some kind of software? Do I need to purchase a microphone? I downloaded Audacity for free but couldn't find a "record what you hear" option. Am wondering if I need to install a microphone in order to use it.

Yes you'll need a microphone. It needs to be close to the woods/birds to avoid picking up wind and unwanted noise.

"Record what you hear" would be for things playing on your computer/off the internet.
