I am interested in purchasing a MP3 player and am curious as to do I need to know what computer it will use. The MP3 player is the Iriver H10 20Gb Mp3 Player. My PC uses XP. Do I need other software to go along with this to download music or to read books, etc. Basically does the MP3 player do everything for me once I get the files on there?
    Thanks

Most players can function with or without, depends on the "convenience or features" factor. Many new players have a preference to "pc media player" programs. Example, iPod automatically syncs with iTunes. When couple with their preferred media program, allows access to all of the players features. For your player, Windows Media Player is the preferred sync program. I upgraded to WMP 11 recently for managing 4 different brands of mp3 players. It works very well. Hook up your player to your computer via USB connections. Once you have a connection, fire up WMP. With iRiver, I would guess WMP will instantly recognize the player and allow you to make a profile for the player. From their you can start creating your player library / playlist(s).
    Enjoy :)

    ADDITIONAL NOTE
You will have two areas of music ownership.
Songs downloaded from Internet via legal sites and stored on your player have restrictions. Where can they be stored, how many copies, and where (what device) they can be played. CD's you purchased and have stored (as mp3's / wmp files) on your computer do not have these types of restrictions.
