    Hello Folks:

Need some expert opinions on using an external USB or Firewire HDD's for backing up Data. I'm thinking if purchasing one for this purpose.

    What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Are they easy to install also? Do you have to partition and format these drives?

    Thanks for the information

    rjshenal :)

Six of one, half dozen of the other. Personally, I use small (9.5mm)laptop drives (up to 20gig) in a USB external case because most machines have USB ports - not so with firewire but this too is changing rapidly. Yes, drives must be formatted. Formatting can be done with 40/44 pin converter (required for laptop drives run from regular PC IDE) or by using disc management in XP. Drivers are required for most devices with 98, some with 2000 but XP recognizes most with no additional drivers required.
