Hello! For the last 5 days, I can't log on to my computer under my user profile.

When I fire up the computer, 3 profile icons appear: one for me on the left, one for my husband in the middle, and then a "guest" one of the right that my children use when they go on the computer.

I usually click on mine, enter my password, and then have access to my stuff, including my email.

Now, when I enter my password, I get a message that says "The User Profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded. "

In order to use the computer, I've been clicking on the middle one and going on as my husband, but I want to get back to my own. All my emails are under my profile, including credit card statements and info from the college where my son starts classes next week.

Also, a few weeks, Internet Explorer stopped working. The window would open up, but a website wouldn't appear. the screen would just stay mostly white. I finally just started using Firefox instead. Could this be related?

I have an HP Pavilion Desktop s5-105-z with Windows 7 and SP 1. I frequently run Malwarebytes, CCleaner, Spybot, and use Comodo Firewall and AVG 2014 based on the wonderful help and information you've all given me in the past when I've had problems.

    Thank you,
    Betsy

Thank you Whiskeyman. I've been trying to understand the directions for the past few days. I'm now actively trying to do it. I started with method 1, but since I'm the administrator of the computer and it currently won't accept my password, that won't work. So I'm trying to get the computer in safe mode to try it the other way.

The directions listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215/en-us, following Method 1, tell me to back up my registry, which I'm unfamiliar with. When I click on and follow the directions for backing up my registry, I'm able to get to a point where it says "Registry Editor ", and then 6 things are listed, all starting with HKEY, and I have no idea what to pick.

I'm hoping that someone can be very patient with me and lead me through this. I haven't been able to get to my emails or any of my documents for a week. I have a hotel confirmation in my email for when I take my son to college that I need to find!

    Thank you!

Also, I tried to follow the directions for "Fix a corrupted user profile ", where it tells how to create a new profile and then copy files to this new profile. When I go to users, I see several folders: a folder with my name, one with my husband's name, and one with guest, which is the profile the kids use.

When I click on the folder with my name, it is empty. That seems bad. I've been using this computer for 2 years and have tons of Word documents stored here. Why is that folder empty?

    Thank you,
    Betsy

    Solved the problem

I followed your suggestions and finally figured out how to go into safe mode and so it said with a restore point. I was able to get my computer to go back a few weeks in time and get it fixed.

Thank you so much for your help.
