Thanks to Ramona, I successfully weaned my city-based Win98SE desktop from outlook Express to Netscape 7.02 mail. However, the wizard took me in a strange direction when I tried to do the same thing on the Win2k machine here at the camp. Netscape mail thinks my user name is .....@pop1.ns.sympatico.ca, and will not give me access. This is of course the name of the incoming mail server, not my name, which should be ...@ns.sympatico.ca. My DSL provider is eager to help, but they only support 4.7, and there seems to be no place within NetScape 7.2 "Edit>Preferences>Mail and Newsgroups ", where the correction can be made together with my password. Can you help?

    Hi huitre,

Thanks to Ramona, I successfully weaned my city-based Win98SE desktop from outlook Express to Netscape 7.02 mail.

    Way to go huitre!

Your user name does not include the "@" symbol, or am I understanding you correctly? You said:
This is of course the name of the incoming mail server, not my name, which should be ...@ns.sympatico.ca.

I'm not certain whether you are saying that the incoming server name should be ...@ns.sympatico.ca, or that your user name should be ...@ns.sympatico.ca. Sorry for my confusion!

If it is your user name which contains the @ symbol, then there is a script which must be added to the user.js file, in order for your Mail to work. So let me know...

You would edit the Server Settings here, and note that you must have your Mail window open to access these settings:

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings

I believe I am having the same problem.

I'm trying to add email for my new DSL account in version 7.02. When I try to get my incoming mail, the password field comes up and instead of displaying my user account as, username@domain.net, it comes up with my pop server name tacked on. It looks like this:

    username@domain.net@pop.domain.net

Obviously, this email account is not recognized by my DSL provider.
(please note that my DSL provider wants my username to be my complete
email address.) Trying to use only my username, the way that Netscape usually fills in the field, it still tacks on my pop address which looks like:

    username@pop.domain.net

It is also doing the same thing with my outgoing mail as the server needs a password from me. It adds my smtp address onto the end of my email account.

I reinstalled Netscape with a new download as a first course of action, assuming a corrupt file. That didn't solve it, so I contacted my service provider.

After going through tutorials we were sure that all fields were filled out correctly.

Someone suggested that I create a user.js file assuming that having "@" in my username would fix it. It didn't.

Is this the same as your problem, huitre? Any help someone could suggest would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Forum, pcigno!

    Hi pcigno,

Is this the script that you added to your user.js file:

    user_pref( "mail.allow_at_sign_in_user_name ", true);

    Hi Ramona,

Yup, that's the one. I should mention I'm not experienced with using code. Looking closer, I'm not sure that I have it configured right.

    Hi pc,

Just do a copy and paste of the above, to your user.js file.

Sorry, it didn't work. :( I'm probably doing something wrong.

Also, I'm not quite sure how this would help. The problem is I have too many "@"
    symbols in my username! :)

I'm pretty sure my user.js file is properly placed. It's sitting in my windows\application data\mozilla\profiles\default\xxx.slt file, and my system says it recognizes a change when I close the file after editing it.

BTW, I started by copying a sample user.js file and putting it in place. I've also tried changing my "you wrote" response for my mailnews replies as a test for my .js file. That isn't working either with newsgroups. I must be overlooking something.

    Hi pc,

Another workaround that users have reported to work, specifically our Windows BBS Administrator, Arie:

Add the "%" character in place of the "@" character to your user name.

    Example: ramona%domain.invalid

You have your user.js file in the correct folder. Keep in mind, that if you edit the user.js file, then you must also edit the prefs.js file. All entries in the user.js are written to the prefs.js. You might take a look at this explanation of the USER.JS File.

Back up your prefs.js file before editing.

Another thought: Netscape must be closed to edit the prefs.js file. You can edit the user.js file with Netscape open, however; the change will not take effect until Netscape is restarted. Could this be your problem.

    Gee, still no change.

One thing that I'm noticing is that the prefs.js scripts are not adding the new lines placed in the user.js. I tried a search for key words such as "allow ", and failing that, I went line by line.

Afterwords, I re-opened Netscape, I wound up with one new script which seems to be a duplicate of one other, but again without changes.

I changed @ characters in my username to % and all that happens is that the % character winds up in the username.

FWIW, one other thing I've noticed: I also have my original email account still active. When I first set up my new account, but before I realized that my password wouldn't work because of the incorrect addressing, and before I made my new POP and SMTP servers my primaries, the old account worked fine. Since I've changed them over, now the old account does the same thing.

I'm also with Sympatico and have Netscape 4.7, not your later version.

However, I have had pretty reasonable success with Sympaticos' telephone help. Why don't you just give them a call and they'll tell you how to set up your mail.

Anytime there is a crash or other problem where I lose my connection, they just "walk" me through it, and I'm on line again.

Getting your problem straightened out should be just as simple.

    Good luck.
