Does he get on and just not see the "welcome screen" where he can pick a user?

Yes at that point he has to hit control delete twice and then he can log on. Guess he has got it to working ok now by using system restore but he still wonders what he did,Gary

I ran into the same problem a couple of times last week. Welcome Log on screen comes up, no users to click for logon. Normal is no logon screen, I am only user.

First time it happened, control-alt-delete brings up another small screen with user name (mine) and box to enter password.

This machine not password protected, clicked "logon" w/o entering a password, machine logged me on. Machine booted normally for a couple of days after that with only welcome screen before desktop.

No Idea what caused it and no idea what fixed it.

2nd time it happened, couple of days later, same routine, clicked "logon" w/o password, this time instead of log on, got same screen back again, box to enter password, tried this several times w/o password, no dice. Machine looking for non existant password?

Shut down with reset button, reboots, displays start up options dos screen. Select start windows normally, same results, logon screen with no users. Control-alt-delete brings up logon screen requesting password. Try logon w/o password, just get same screen back again. Shutdown with reset button got screen to select startup options, selected last settings that worked, machine booted ok.

That was a couple of days ago, so far no recurrance. again, no idea what caused it.

It did the same to me as well!

I was...well...bricking it shall we say, when i didnt have an icon to get logged on!

Eventually, I got logged on and it was a setting in one of the powertoys for XP that are available from Microsoft.com called "Tweak UI "

The setting is in there where you can choose not to have you login displayed.

See if he has that installed on the computer, as he may of changed a setting in there.

    :)
