My machine is Windows XP, SP2. I have setup user accounts, with only one userID. I noticed awhile back, when sitting at the login screen, there was a message stating "1 unread mail message ". Recently, this has toggled to 2 unread mail messages.

My question is this: where is this mail message coming from and how do I read it?

The unread messages information is displayed only if you have installed a mail client that's designed to provide that information to Win XP. Usually, that's Outlook Express and Windows Messenger. You may have set up a Messenger account without realizing it.

If you click on the unread messages notification, it should tell you the name of the account for which messages are available.

You can download TweakUI from MS Powertoys Install it, and then click "log on" and change the unread mail display.

My guess is that you aren't using the Outlook Express feature, and the one message in the box is the first generic one all users get?

Oh yeah, I forgot about that "welcome to Outlook Express" message in OE's inbox when it's installed.

You can also fire up Outlook Express, go to the Inbox and delete that generic "message," which should also get rid of the unread-mail notice. "Should" is the key word there ;)

Sorry that it took me so long to reply to this. Thank you for the information.

Arie - the link you provided did not work. When I navigate to the registry key indicated in the link, there is no MessageExpiryDays.

Johanna - the TweakUI program did the trick. Thank you!
