When I installed XP, it asked a bunch of questions. In response to one (maybe more) I typed in my name. Then, near the end of the installation, it asked for names of users I wanted to have access. Again, I typed in my name. It came back with that I could not use certain characters in a username, nor could I use my name. My guess is that it created an account with my name before that point. Thing is, I don't see that account on the welcome screen. How can I remedy this? Also, I do I long into the Admistrator account?

The account that XP sets up during the initial stages of the installation is an administrator account and it asks you to type in a password. Towards the end of the installation, it asks you to provide users of the computer. These accounts are also given administrator privileges.

If you open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Documents and Settings\... there should be one folder for each user that you created towards the end of the installation.

The administrator (the account created automatically) has no folder until you have started the computer in Safe Mode the first time. When you do that, you will be prompted for the password which can be "blank" (you didn't type in a password during the installation).

Restart the computer in normal mode and it should now have the user "administrator ".

    What characters?

All user created accounts should be displayed in the welcome screen. You can also check in Control Panel > User Accounts. (I don't think the automatically created user "administrator" is displayed and neither are a few hidden "system accounts ".)

You can create a new account, give it administrator privileges and next, delete any user created account. Do not delete the default accounts, such as "Guest ". The system expects it to be there. Make sure that you do not delete all accounts with administrator privileges.

Well, I don't remember exactly, and I'm not about to do a re-install to see which ones, but basically, they were the ones that folks typically use on BBSs when the want to bleep out foul language.

Thanks for that info. I'll try a safe mode boot.

    UPDATE:
I did do a safe mode boot, and it did created an "Administrator" folder where you said it would. However, when I boot in "normal mode ", I still do not see the "Administrator" account, only the ones I created near the end of the install. Only if I do a "safe mode" boot do I see the "Administrator" account.

That's the way it's supposed to work. If you want to log on to the administrator account in normal mode, press ctrl+alt+delete twice at the welcome screen. You can add it to the welcome screen with a reg hack but it's easier and safer to use something like Tweakui to do it. If you download Tweakui, in the left pane click on Logon and then in the right pane, put a check mark in the box next to "show administrator on on welcome screen ".
