I am the sole user of my computer and in Control Panel the operative accounts is shown in my name 'Peter', but in Documents & Settings I am still referred to as User 1 ( I have the usual Administrator, All Users, Default User and User 1, the latter being operative).
I'd like to change User 1 to 'Peter' so that my name as opposed to 'User 1' appears on various applications. But I don't want to do this if it will adversely affect my computer.
Can someone help me as to how I can safely do this?
Some months ago I changed the OEM name to my name using a tweak from Kellys Korner, but obviously that didn't affect the User.
I referred above to the 4 categories of User in Documents & Settings, do I need them all or is it best to leave them alone?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi cozzilex,

Although your user profile is not damaged as such if you really want to show the folder in documents and settings as "peter" you'll need to follow the instructions below from Microsoft.

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP

If followed correctly you should not have any issues but as usual I would advise a full system backup before proceeding.

    Thanks Wildfire,
I should have told you my XP is the Home version and when I go to User Accounts in the Control Panel there is no Advanced tab, which is one of the steps in the MS article you have referred me to.
When I was checking this out before I posted the above I found one response from windows help that said that whilst the welcome name could be changed on my version of XP, the actual User name could not.
What I'm really looking for is a very simple 'fix'. I'm afraid with my level of expertise, if I start deleting accounts and transferring files, I am going to mess things up.
    Any advice?
    Cheers

If you start up in safe mode and logon as administrator you'll have access to that advanced tab.

As far as changing the "actual user name" in XP Home I can guarantee it is possible (I've done it with this very system). It is not however a simple fix so unless you are particularly egocentric I'd just leave it alone.

    Thanks Wildfire,
On refection I'll put common sense before egocentricity!

No problem, even though you have declined to follow through, the instructions above would resolve your issue so if you could please mark this thread as resolved. ;)

Yes, I can confirm that that is so; egocentricity finally got the better of me and I followed it through and to my astonishment it worked (I would respectfully add that the astonishment refers NOT to your instructions working, but at my ability to get them right!)
I am very pleased to mark this as solved.
By the way, once I am satisfied that everything is doing what it should, is it safe to remove the User 1 account, or is it best to leave it there; and if I leave it, can I remove it from the welcome screen.
    Thanks Wildfire.

You brave egocentric man you :) :bigthumbssmilie:

    Happy I could help :)

Regarding your old account, I'd leave it for a while cozzielex to ensure older (non MS Obedient) software is ok but I'm fairly confident you won't have any issues :)

    EDIT:

Once you're comfortable you can remove the user and files in control panel, post back if you need help but as I said leave it a week or two.

Just to take your tips a step further, I did have a few problems and some (2) files wouldn't copy to the new user, so I had to do a bit of manual work. However, to those of you with more valid and sensible reasons for creating a new account the above is the way to do it.
