A co-worker of mine has lost or misplaced his XP installation disk. He needs to re-install Windows. Can he use my OEM XP disk to re-install, but use his product key code, which is posted on his computer.

Most likely not, specially if the hardware is not exactly the same.

Yeah I tried doing that with and OEM copy of Windows ME and it wouldn't let me do it. With XP, of course, these things have gotten tighter if anything. Unless the same company made both computers, I doubt it will work. Have you tried calling the OEM company? They might charge a few bucks for a replacement disk, but it might be worth it. Barring that, I'd look on ebay.

Not necessarily destined for doom. A generic OEM CD should work fine and I've also installed XP to an HP computer using a Dell CD although one has to know how to change the Key in the registry. If your friend's valid CD came from a system builder it will be devoid of machine specific add-ons and links to hidden partitions so you should be fine. I guess the only safe advice is "It all depends ".

    ;)
