Using four external drives connected, each to a separate USB connector on HP CQ5115uk desktop computer. Does this slow the computer working speed? I realise that modern hard drives have inbuilt cut out, after a time lapse of non usage.

Only in that the data transfer speed from an external drive via USB is less than that from an internal drive.

Simply connecting them will not slow down the computer as they will only read/write on request.
