My new AMD 2400 computer has a Matsui MS8188E Series Mainboard which has 6 USB 2.0 ports. However I have just noticed at the beginning of its Instruction book a note saying :

    1. The USB 2.0 driver only supports Windows XP and Windows 2000.
    2. If you connect a usb 2.0 hub to the root hub, plugging USB devices into this hub,the system might not successfully execute certain USB devices’ connection because it could not recognise these devices.

What does the information in 2. mean and should I assume that with Windows ME installed the ports only support USB1?

    Regards,
    Pat

    Hi Pat,

You say that you have a new computer with ME installed?

You should be able to get proper drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's web site or the computer mfgr's site.

#2 may mean that an external hub is not supported, but I'm not sure; that would be unusual, IMO.

You can try a USB2 device to see if it works, and if Worst case, you can purchase USB/firewire cards to install internally that come with proper drivers.

#2 may be a reference to using a multi external USB connector. If it isn't powered externally you may have problems running more than one device due to power constraints. An externally powered multi USB setup should be fine providing you have the required USB 2 drivers installed for the M/B, the external USB multi-connector (hub) is also USB2 capable and USB ME drivers installed for each of the connected devices.

If I remember correctly every Windows OS starting with Win98SE supported USB 2.

I thought that native support for USB2 only started with W2K after an update was installed. But W2K didn't originally ship USB2 capable. I think one of the service packs (1 or 2?) provided support as well.

Thankyou all for the information. I don't as yet have a USB2 device but as suggested, will try one first before buying!

    Kind regards,
    Pat
