On several occasions my husband has been working on a document (usually word) in Windows XP and when he has attempted to save it to his usb thumb drive he loses the file from the drive altogether and it shuts down word at the same time.

It has happened again tonight. What I'd like to know is, is there any way of recovering the file from his thumb drive and why does this happen occasionally?

He has had this happen to a different thumb drive but he lost everything on it.

    Thanks
    Sue

One guess is that the drive is in sleep mode and not fully awake....Might consider saving the file to local hard drive and copy to the thumb drive when needed.

There are many free Data Recovery softwares that might maybe be able to help.

Word also has a built in auto backup that you should turn on.
