Just to get some input, my laptop's bios doesn't have usb option to enable for dos, but there may be a solution here http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20021003S0007 I'm going to try. I'd appreaciate what you all have discovered, Cyn

Do yourself a big favor. Look before leaping. Or food for thought

I suggest that you do not put the Mouse and/or Keyboard on USB.

    I says this because.

If something should happen that you do have to boot from a Floppy or CD and said device does not have the proper USB files included you WILL BE S.O.L

USB is nice but I am of the strong opinion that the Mouse and Keyboard should never have been designed for USB.

    Your call.

    PS.
BTW. A bit of SAD experience helped me write this reply.

Perhaps adding some lines to the autoexec.bat file can do it for you. All you have to do is boot the computer with the floppy. Just add these lines to the bottom of the A:\Autoexec.bat in this order. and let the BAT file do the typing for you.
    format c:
    X:\win98\setup

I believe when format is called from a BAT file, you do not get the prompt for Y/N.
Have the CD in the drive before the format is complete, if not installing off of the hard drive.

Your idea may be well intended but there is a problem or two.

The problem machine does not have a floppy.

The problem machine ( laptop ) has a bad keyboard ( I believe liguid was spilled on it ) Any way there are several keys that do not work.

Also the USB software would need to be put on a CD using the other machine in order to install it on the machine without a floppy.

And it would still would more than likely require a full working keybaord to install it. And a USB keyboard would not work without the software.

And if the CD that was just made is what I think it is has Format etc. already on it. But I think some of the bad keys would be needed. I believe " O " is one of the bad ones.

Doesn't the Laptop in question have a place to plug in a regular keyboard ? All of the ones I have seen do. If it does then that just might be of great help getting you out the jam you are in.

I forgot to mention the ps2 port had been used so much the connection adapter broke away from the anchoring part. A regular "never ending story" isn't it?

I do have ezgig pmcia card that attaches laptop hard drives--use it all the time for an old Thinkpad hd, but when the hd in question is attached, it litterally squeals, although there were 2 occasions when it worked.

All else fails, I'll try an old version laplink and try to access it that way......possibly. Thanks, Cyn
