Was there an update for USB support for Windows 98 first edition or is a total install required using W98se?

I don't know if there is an update available or not but Win98 FE does have USB support right out of the box. I used to use Win98FE and had a couple of USB devices that I used without ever having a problem. I never installed any update that I can remember. You have to install drivers for the device but aside from that it should work. It's said that Win98SE has better support for USB than Win98FE but I couldn't tell you whether that's true or not. I've used both OS's and never had a problem with USB on either one, so..... Perhaps it depends on the device itself. It may be that some USB devices require 98SE but I've never come across one myself.

I am only adding to what Zander said. I was able to use USB devices (at USB 1.0 or 1.1 speed) using Win98FE.
On the other hand, I know the specifications of some devices told me I had to have Win98SE to be able to use them. I never tested the matter.
