usb problems

    i have a dell laptop inspron 1100 and i bought a external hard drive and it hooks up ok but after a small time i get an error that the usb has not enough power to run the hard drive. what can i do ?

    You'll need to get a powered USB hub.

    Most external hard drives come with its own power supply so you don't have to rely upon a powered usb port. If the drive doesn't have its own power supply then you'll need a powered usb hub as was stated above.

    Did the hard drive come with a USB cable? If it did be sure to use that one or one that is the same length. I have found long cables do not always work without a hub that provides power, as mentioned in the earlier messages. Good Luck!

    ok first off what size is the portable drive ie: 3.5" or 2.5"
    if 3.5" external drive it will require its own PSU
    if 2.5" it only requires a usb cable with an double connector at the end you plag into the Laptop/Pc it looks like an ordinary USB cable but with an extra plug on one end this is to allow for extra current draw and its this that i think your problem is
