USB problems [linking W2k/XP computers with switch]

    My OS is Windows XP pro. The USB ports do not work properly and I get the following message in the Error Log:
    The USB Bridge Cable (Windows 2000) service failed to start due to the following error. The service can not be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
    There is no problem with the motherboard. Help please.

    hi rjrobles, do you have any yellow exclamation marks in your USB stack in device manager, and is it enabled in the BIOS. The other question is front or back USB or both.

    rjrobles - Welcome to the Board :)

    The USB Bridge Cable (Windows 2000) service is not a standard Windows XP service - are you trying to link 2 computers together with a USB-USB cable or have you done so in the past?

    Have you looked in Services to see if the service exists and checked the setting - disabled would be a good place to start.

    Thanks for the welcome.
    Yes, I am using a switch to go from a 2ooo to an XP computer in the network.
    I looked in Services and can not find a reference to it.

    My experiences with linking 2 computers together with a USB-USB cable many moons ago were not good :)

    As I recall a software package needed to be loaded - have you tried a reinstall of that?

    I think you may get more guidance in the Networking forum so I have moved your thread there with title edit.

    I have a yellow question mark in Other Devices under MP830 which is a Canon Printer connected at a USB input.

    I have had a similar experience to Pete with a USB cable and the cable itself required drivers to be installed (hairy :D)

    Since other USB devices are showing errors, I would reinstall the main USB (controller) drivers.

    Under the heading Universal Serial Bus Controllers, highlight and uninstall any with the term "controller ". They will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot. Let us know if there are changes. Also look for a listing "Enhanced" controller. That is the controller for USB 2.0 and should be present for the USB drivers to work correctly using USB 2.0.
